Never Mine

I had achieved a thing or two.
Achievement brought worry and rue.

I then found how I’d be betrayed.
The thought of it had me dismayed.

I sat with that dismay a while.
I sat, and soon started to smile.

The gifts, the riches, and the treasures.
The bigger life, the fancy pleasures.

As there was more I thought was mine.
The thought of losing it confined.

Take these things, take them again.
These were never mine, my friend.

They’ll take it all, but never mind.
For they will leave the best behind.

What they will leave works as we speak.
Plotting ways to higher peaks.

It isn’t me, it isn’t mine.
But I’ll enjoy it for a time.

I once found how I’d be betrayed.
The thought of it had me dismayed.

But now it’s here and I am fine.
Losing what was never mine.
